The Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud

Oort Cloud

What is the Kuiper Belt?

The Kuiper Belt is a ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. It is home to dwarf planets like Pluto, Haumea, and Makemake, as well as thousands of frozen comets.

What is the Oort Cloud?

The Oort Cloud is a hypothetical, distant region of icy bodies that surrounds the Solar System. Scientists believe it is the source of long-period comets like Halley’s Comet.

Key Differences

  • The Kuiper Belt is closer, starting at 30 AU (Astronomical Units).
  • The Oort Cloud is much farther, extending up to 100,000 AU.
